This editing includes pointing out weaknesses in the storyline and in writing style, making suggestions for additions to the text, and for removing and reorganizing text. Mary will also make comments about overall appearance and general layout. The substantive editing stage usually occurs before the author prepares a final draft; the author is prepared and willing to make major revisions to the manuscript if necessary.
Line by line editing for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and other writing mechanics. Mary will also check for consistency in fonts and text layout. The mechanical editing stage usually occurs after the author is satisfied with the overall content of the manuscript and only wants to make mechanical corrections.
A final reading of the manuscript to check for stray typing or formatting errors. The proofreading stage usually occurs just before the manuscript for is ready for publication.
